I make my living as a Permaculture designer, researcher, and educator. My work covers themes as diverse as ecological waste and water treatment, integrated mushroom production, whole farm design, urban agroforestry, and project development and planning. My design work (in collaboration with Ethan Roland of Appleseed Permaculture) appears in Lee Reich’s book Landscaping With Fruit, as the reference example of Permaculture design. I’m currently studying ecological design at the graduate level with John Todd, and finishing up an MS in Agroecology and Ecological Landscape Design. My thesis work is on the design of agroforestry systems for working farms in the northeastern US. I was recently awarded the James Baldwin Turner Fellowship by University of Illinois, so I will be continuing my research and practice in ecological design there, as a PhD candidate, starting in September 2010.

My time for private design work is limited, so I please be advised that I only take on one or two clients a year. Shorter-term consultation, and teaching, are easier. I’m passionately devoted to teaching to a popular audience, and I regularly escape from academia to teach - as often as I can!
